Fredrick Douglass

As a slave, Fredrick Douglass secretly learned to read and write before escaping to freedom at age 21. Douglass’s tremendous intellect, oratorical skills and personal story made him a powerful voice in the abolitionist movement. After the Civil War and end of slavery he became an advocate for women’s suffrage.
