Mahatma Gandhi, born in 1869 in India, was a leader advocating for nonviolent resistance to colonial rule by Britain (India had been a British colony since the 19th century). He inspired millions to join the nonviolent freedom movement and helped catalyze India's independence in 1947. His methods influenced figures like MLK and Nelson Mandela.
