Massasoit was the leader of the Wampanoag Confederacy. He played a crucial role in forming an alliance with the Pilgrims, which was vital for the survival of the settlers. The First Thanksgiving, celebrated in 1621, involved the Pilgrims who settled at Plymouth Colony and the Native Americans from the Wampanoag tribe.
