Sir Earnest Shackleton attempted to ski to the South Pole in 1915. His sailing ship-the Endurance-became trapped in sea ice stranding its crew of 28 in Antarctica. After surviving the winter, Shackleton led a group 800m across the sea to the Falkland Islands in a lifeboat. No crew members died in one of the greatest feats of leadership in history.
