Phil Knight

Phil Knight was born in 1938 at the end of the Great Depression. He started Nike by selling shoes out of the trunk of his car at track meets. On this day in 1974, Nike patented waffle-soled trainers—invented in a waffle iron. In 1984, Nike took a risk on an unknown basketball player-Michael Jordan. Today, the Air Jordan brand is worth several billion.
