John L. Lewis
John L. Lewis was born in Iowa in 1880. After 3 years of high school he went to work in a coal mine, where he quickly became a labor leader in the United Mine Workers. He founded the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), which created the United Steel Workers of America and helped millions of workers organize during the Great Depression.
