America 2040: New American Heartland
In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn in as US President during the depths of the Great Depression. His Administration would go on to enact the “New Deal”, a sweeping series of programs designed to extricate America from the Great Depression. Social Security, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC),Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) were all passed in the New Deal and are still around today.
Additionally, the New Deal created:
· the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which provided jobs on rural lands owned by federal, state, and local governments in natural resource conservation
· the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA), which aimed to boost agricultural prices
· the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which employed millions to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads
These programs were ended after they were no longer needed.
In 2023, America needs a New Deal 2.0. This time our problem isn’t unemployment but instead crumbling infrastructure, rampant deindustrialization, and multiple social crises. These issues should be familiar to Ad Astra readers and many of the proposals we’ve offered are meant to address them.
Ad Astra proposes a New Deal 2.0 along the following categories:
1. Industry
2. Health
3. Education
4. Technology
